Across Ord, some trees grow jet black wood. This wood all has similar properties and is incredibly useful as a crafting material. This rare wood is as hard as stone but lighter than other wood. Any wooden or mostly wooden item (such as a bow, an arrow, or a spear) can be made from darkwood and weighs only half as much as a normal wooden item of that type. Items not normally made of wood or only partially of wood (such as a battleaxe or a mace) either cannot be made from darkwood or do not gain any special benefit from being made of darkwood.

Darkwood is exceptionally light and buoyant. A shield, longbow or similar sized item can be used as a flotation device in water, giving its wielder an automatic success on Strength (Athletics) checks to tread water.

Darkwood does not burn and takes no damage at all from mundane or magical fire, or even lava.

Black baga is a type of darkwood.

Darkwood Weapons[]

Weapons that are predominantly made from wood such as bows, crossbows, clubs or spears gain the benefits of being made from darkwood.

  • Weapons that have the Heavy property, lose that property if made mostly of darkwood.
  • One handed weapons made from darkwood gain the Light property
  • Thrown weapons have their range increased by 10 feet.

Darkwood Shields[]

Darkwood shields are well known for their lightness as well as their fire resistance. You can add the shields bonus AC to dexterity saves to avoid fire based spells and spell-like abilities such as Fireball or Burning Hands.
